Everyone has their own way of dealing with things... distracting yourself from what is causing pain might be a short-term fix, but you might be better off going inside the emotions and facing them head on. You'll be surprised at how they are not so debilitating/scary after all. If that is not an option then distract yourself by doing some activity that engages your mind in a healthy way.
