How can I improve my new web app?
I built a web app that tracks changes in timetable and informs students when there is an opening for the class. I am ok with the programming stuff but design wise, I am not too comfortable? Any ideas to improve and promote it to students?

The colors (blue, yellow, red, green, pink, orange) clash violently. less is more...

There are zillions of examples of both sites and apps that decided to ramp it up in terms of design -- and then oops, users rejected it and the stakeholders had to scroll back to the original design. And if you use Flash, make sure you give users a choice of Flash/noFlash. Flash is gorgeous but often ticks users off.

Another thing you can do to improve your app, is to create features that allow students to personalize the design themselves. Think MYYAHOO, Google banner, etc. This is the era of Me Media, after all!

Look at Facebook and believe it or not, SouthPark, for keep-it-simple-stupid design. Students don't need a ton of bells n whistles in terms of look and feel -- they just need what it sounds like you do best-- functionality.
