I can see a number of commercial and consumer uses. I think it would be a great way to liven up meetings and presentations, a huge amount of information and ideas could be drawn together from across a number of sources. It would also be a fantastic tool in a client workshopping environment where everyone could get involved, have their input, be creative and develop ideas on the spot. In a more consumer market it could be a great family entertainment tool, just look at Nintendo DS and Wii

Then there would be access points, e.g. screens/projections, traditional tv area, fridge, study, bedrooms where the remote can access a broader range of functions

following on the idea of having a controler, they could be how the people interact with the house, so each person would have one e.g bracelet. I would envisage a limited number of functions could be carried out through gestures without requiring a screen, e.g lighting and room temperature and phone/intercom. a limited umber of functions to toggle between and operate by movement

A challenge will be the operating system and the arrangement of functions so as not to confuse people.

A benefit is in intuitive interaction with the technology, you want to turn a page you turn a page making it easy to pick up especially older technology phobic people.

Another challenge would be to isolate the controller’s movements. This could be done by a specified position in the room, eye contact, or by a device worn by the controller e.g. a bracelet

There would need to be a menu bar to go to all the options, or more likely in the example where the tv was in operation, you could have favourites set up in the tv view on the side perhaps, e.g. lights and telephone, like a living room setting, which would be available without navigating into the main menu

Each mode would require an activation to avoid confusion, so for example if you had the tv on, you would need to slide the on bar etc to enable the tv remote rather than it picking up on random movements.

Adding to that if you turned your hands into a typing position – if virtual fingers and a virtual keyboard came up on screen that would be very useful typing

The home computer will also hold documents, images, videos, books and the interaction/gestures required with these are well documented via iphone/ipads

In a home scenario: In a similar method to scrolling apps on an iphone/ipad, if the information was presented on a screen or projection then that would be an easy fit for a person to gesture control a home computer system, which can control almost all areas of a home, from security cameras, tv, lighting music etc

A practical business application would be for surveillance, e.g a casino. Where an operator could control, orientate and zoom into the video feeds.

However, in certain situations, dimming the lights and turning up the music using only hand gestures would look pretty slick...

Unless this technology can turn you into Matilda, you are always going to be limited by the fact that many household actions already require some physical interaction: i.e. putting in the toast, filling the kettle etc. no real advantage to then having gesture control when one button is all that is currently needed. Interestingly, as touchscreen technology becomes more ubiquitous, it won't be popular with TVs as you'd have to leave the couch, so GR could have uses there...

One major thing, which someone has already higlighted is ease of use - that is the seller, to maximise the pool of users you need to ensure as many people as possible will be able to use the device

Also, how personalised is this sort of technology? I feel as though communicating with computers is possible the least personal interaction around.

I find this concept a lot to get used to. The notion that my moements will be computed for some end result, volume going up or down, lights coming off and on, bizarre. I feel that our reliance on technology is exponetionally increasing faster than my comprehension. How much easier is it to use you hand to increase the volume compared to using a remote to? Is not pure gluttony and laziness that these concepts are pursued?

Also see: home entertainment systems - many high-end versions already make use of this (hand clap for lights and voice recog for music etc). This works off a central server/cpu and is def seen as aspirational among consumers

Another idea that has come from Minority Report which is about to be launched (in Asia I think?) is clothes shoppers being scanned on entry to a shop and the sizing being read immediately by a central cpu system- helpful with stock enquiries, consumer preferences etc

One final thought is that make sure that the idea is not too expensive idea to develop then you can sell it to the masses or it is expensive to develop but you can sell it to the rich few and make a nice profit. Its volume or margin. Need to think about that

As part of Augmented Reality trend I think a new form of communication/language b/t tech and humans is inevitable.Benefits include a more personalised, interactive and responsive shopping experience. Downsides include resentment in conforming to a rigid system of communication. Language is fragmented and disparate(multiculturalism/slang/txtspeak etc) and this system may find it hard to constantly evolve with changing market segments and the consumer preferences within them. What's the big sell?

Another might be presentations or the guy who directs the orchestra. It is vitally important that what ever it is is accurate as speech recognition software has been around for ages. It never caught on because the accuracy was too low

I said that the most successful inventions are ease of use and functionality. Like Apple and the iphone. Remember gestures have very different meanings with different cultures. The best way I could think of is a software program reading hand gestures from the blind. Perhaps even lip reading and translating into English from different languages. Hope this helps! Good luck!
