If they are available to you, I would buy a MAC. I used PCs for years and recently switched. While my father still has many problems with his desktop and laptop PCs I do not. Apparently there is not a big enough market for viruses with MACs, so hackers wanting important information have targeted the PCs. I never have issues with viruses.

You should be able to buy TWO pc's for that much money. Consider buying a desktop pc (for the kids) AND a laptop pc (for the adults, and the older child may need it for school in a couple years), and be sure to get a wireless/Wi-Fi router so you can connect the laptop to the internet from anywhere in the house.

Will you use the computer for office work? You might want to get one that has a deal that comes with a printer and scanner.

Since the kids will probably want to play computer games, get a high-end video card for the PC.
