An eye mask w/ motion-detectors, sensitive enough to REM flutters but lightweight. One could input a window of wakefulness based on one's personal basal REM period. At the earliest time w/i that window of time, a standard alarm (or customized sound) wakes one while in a sleep rhythm conducive to awakening.

Just get up and enjoy the day! ... *music* ... Good morning Mr. Andersson, krhm. Sorry to distrube you but just get up and enjoy your life."

It's never happened to me, but I would imagine it's possible for a battery-powered clock's battery to run out during the night. How about an alarm clock that makes a quiet beep when the battery's running low? Or maybe the alarm sound could be a different sound to alert you when the battery's low.
3.
Release caffeine fumes when the alarm rings so as to help you wake up and want your morning coffee.

Here's a problem: you are half awake at some time in the morning and wonder what the time is. You know if you look to your clock you will wake up even more and will have trouble getting back to sleep. However, you can't drop off properly again because you think the alarm clock may go off at any moment! How about an alarm clock that makes a quiet beep on each of the hours before dawn - say, 4 o'clock and 5 o'clock?

An existing idea: the alarm clock that cares. The idea is that it wakes you when you are not in REM sleep, thus you fell less tired. http://ninjamonkeys.co.za/2005/03/30/the_alarm_clock_that_cares/
