If rural India is introduced to the world of Open Source S/w, it will not be limited by Bandwidth for downloading, licencing issues , costly software or a steep leaning curve to start producing good software

@ raseel. Bandwidth is a real problem and how would people be encouraged to check out sites like u have mentioned? I think roadshows are popular in rural india and works if freebees are ditributed through the Inidan postal service or something like that. It would be low cost and high reach.

@hannibal & ananvc - Bandwidth limitation and pure free Distribution of CDs could be replaced by directing the rural populace to sites like http://www.opensourcedeal.com
8.
@hannibal - I mentioned Bandwidth to account for the bottleneck of downloading the softwares and Distributions. The learning curve for open source does not seem as steep , simple because of the large community support, freedom to discuss the software and easy availability. What exactly do you mean by "Village Networks"
7.
@DottoreNova - Even if there isn't a massive demand right now, I think it's just a matter of time before the Biggies will be scampering all over to please the average farmer to buy their IT products
6.
is there demand in rural india for PC's?
5.
Use cable TV network to spread basic computer education. Next step may be to create "village groups" who can interact with each other to achieve financial growth.
4.
Your logic above is rather flawed. Awareness of open source will not affect bandwidth!! And the learning curve for open source is just as steep as for proprietary (not very, IMHO). If you want to distribute open source software, I suggest putting a nice chunk on a bunch of USB keys and air drop them. Their mass will eliminate any chance of impact damage and they will be "plug and go." Just a question - Why wouldn't you distribute using village networks - altready there and effective!
3.
I don't know what age group you are trying to address; Games is a great places to start; once they like it they start picking up other things, and sooner than you know, they will start contributing, if they find something is not there.
2.
Make SourceForge every $100 laptop computer's homepage. Apparently, they are giving away those laptops for free in rural India.
1.
Distribute free CDs with the most popular open source software from SourceForge and a PDF guidebook on using it in Indian languages. Different CDs can be made: one focused on web programming, for instance, or one focused on graphic design software.
