If they want to learn, Lego makes great robotics sets. You program the robot and see the results of your actions immediately.

Teach him to write a program that can hold a basic conversation - that way he is already familiar with the subject. From this you can go on to discussions about the Turing Test etc.

Idea Nr 13 (don't teacht him ....) makes sense to me (i'm the original poster). The point is taht i'm not trying to convince him to do so, he is the one who loves solving problems. So i thought computer programming could be a good exercise - complementary of course. LOGO seems a very interesting approach.

don't teach him specifically how to program, but teach him the joys of problem solving, this is why children play, they are learning how to enjoy solving problems. teach him how to think logically, pose to him ethical dilemmas (not 'should we have invaded iraq' but ones that a relavent to his social situation. social skills are key to happiness not programming skills, and isn't happiness what you want for your child? are you trying to make him into a super brain?

That might be a bit too young. Computer programming contains abstract concepts and often children of that age are not ready to understand them. Wait until he is 9?

I would definitely but only if he is interested. Present some fun solutions and see if they take off. Big thing will be to balance computer with exercise.
