Open Brainstorms
How can safety on college campuses be improved?
Every year thousands of college students become victims of criminal acts on college campuses. The sad reality of the situation is that 80% of these crimes are committed by students themselves. Join us to brainstorm this live on Tuesday July 22 at 8:30 PM CST More specifically brainstorm: What programs, activities, or initiatives could Universities offer to increase safety on campus? What are ways students could use social networking to spread information and improve campus safety? What products or services could be created to encourage safety?

Through honest portrayals in promotional materials to prospective students AND their parents, follow up through mandatory new student orientation, and notifications of local alerts, in addition to the basic security that used be provided to students @ a vulnerable class of people (meaning colleges going back to being responsible for security, trans, lighting, urging responsible behavior) ~ wow, 20th century, 19th century givens that are now too expensive to bother with, with OUR kids? $-driven?
99.
Only adding ideas to #s 61 and 95, et. al. One has to adapt to the environment or be prey. Over 30 years ago, at a college orientation I attended @ a frosh in So Cal(i), the (mandatory attendance meeting) briefing of local crime was provocative, graphic, thorough, and urged one and all not being in denial about these factors. This college also provided campus trans, constant, empowered security, and lighting on common pathways + info update posters in all possible common areas, including bars.
98.
i also agree with the dna database, as a new student you should be required to give a sample, this could cause rapes to go down because youd have such a higher risk of getting caught
97.
in order to encourage people to lock their doors, have a group of people go around campus and just check if doors are locked, if they are not, leave a note in the mailbox saying something like, youre door was left unlocked and you are lucky this time cause we are just reminding you, but next time you may not be so lucky... instill a little fear so people protect themselves
96.
hand out mase key chains for the walk home from the bar instead of captain morgan flashlights.
95.
my friend does safewalk, and yes they are paid, but she said they are severly understaffed right now for the summer. so yeah, hire more people there.
94.
have a no-dedication summer softball league a few scheduled nights a week that people can just show up and play as a drinking alternative
92.
have seminars that explain the best way to respond to different situations (burglaries, muggings, rape, harassing, etc)
87.
university sponsored events such as terrace concerts and guest speakers that provide students a no-charge activity that can still involve drinking
86.
have student safety patrol officers like in elementary school that wear neon vests and yell at people through megaphones
85.
all females(and small males) should be required to become certified Ninjas as a means of self defense
84.
have online parties, connected by webcam, so that everyone can drink at their respective homes(with roommates of course, not alone) yet still feel like they are at a party
83.
hold late night brainstorming sessions on brainreactions.net that keep people inside and off the dangerous streets
81.
allow parties on campus even if that means underagers, have houses tell the police they are going to have a party so they know, the party gets free cups and ping pong balls, the cops don't step in unless it concerns safety, but they know where students will be traveling and can respond to medical emergencies more quickly
80.
provide 24-hour location(s) on campus where students can stay/hang out instead of walking home which may be off campus. for example, don't kick students out of the Union at 6am because its 'not open'
79.
have the university buy the Seattle Supersonics and have them play games every night. then your only problem will be finding a venue big enough to house all the students that want, nay, need to watch
78.
require landlords to improve the security systems for their properties to lower the number of burglaries
76.
less liquor store stings to stop underage drinking and more actual policing of the campus. as useful as an undercover cop in an alley is, I feel like he could be better used
75.
Use students as decoys. Have them pretend to be drunk, stagger down the side walk, then bust the criminals in the act using undercover cops. Get the word out that the cops are tough and will catch them.
74.
hey everybody I appreciate the efforts, If you want to keep storming do so, but feel free to leave whenever you need to, thanks again
71.
allow drinking on campus, have students pay at bars with a student i.d. monitor the number of drinks and only allow a certain amount within a certain amount of time
70.
going along with making bigger examples, put up posters around campus that have pictures of sex offenders around the madison area
69.
Use unidentified police to "rough" up the criminals caught in the act. Put fear in future criminals that you really don't know which people are actually cops.
68.
offer more late night options instead of drinking. for example, the SERF stays open late one night a week. increase this number and add other alternatives
67.
allow drinking on campus, have the school sell alcohol only at select locations, only sell alcohol to students no one else in the area
66.
less focus on limiting the party-school atmosphere and more focus on creating a safe party-school atmosphere
64.
Make the campus safer by making bigger examples of the offenders. Educate all freshmen about the safety concerns...but also educate potential future offenders about the "time" they will pay for the "crime"
63.
have more huge people(i.e. Kevin) patrolling the streets and stopping crime left and right
61.
during freshman orientation, require a safety-orientation session to be completed so students can recognize their options. also require a short online refresher at the beginning of each year
59.
I don't know if the safe-walk position is paid, but make sure it is enough that it would encourage people to sacrifice a night of drinking to protect other students
58.
More lighting is always good. Sober escorts will make a huge impact. Maybe carrying a baseball bat might help as well.
57.
I like the DNA sampling idea as a deterent to keep criminals from committing more crimes. The difficult part will be getting "everyone" to give a sample.
53.
Create a buddy system...sort of like a DD. Ensure any drunk person has a sober person to walk as an escort. Perhaps the Campus could pay a fee for the sober buddy to incent them to stay sober and be the protector.
52.
create university housing that isn't dorm-based. apartments owned and run by university that would encourage upperclassmen to live on campus. apartment style would attract those seeking to leave dorms.
50.
Allow drinking at student functions so that they will get higher attendence, encourage student unity so there is less student on student crime
45.
shouldn't limit the number of 'saferides'. tuition is enough that they should be included
44.
I think they already have the emergency response system with the poles around campus that immediately notify 911 if you press a button(maybe I am wrong). if they don't, they have been relatively successful on other campuses and if they have, increase the amount so that they are accessible to all students on campus
40.
Require Freshman to pass a name test where they must be able to name 100 other freshman by face.
39.
decrease law enforcement focus on menial things such as underage drinking. increase focus on campus(and surrounding area) patrol to eliminate serious crimes i.e. rape, Typewriter-oriented murders, Azzalino shootings
36.
question and answer session between freshman and upperclassmen to gain perspective on what may or may not happen on campus
35.
offer a financial incentive for second, third, fourth year students to stay in University Housing, which is easier to create a safe environment in.
34.
coded entry buildings should operate on a dynamic sequence, changing monthly or whatever the owner sees fit
33.
Public Safety Officers, division of Police force, not concerned with underage drinking, or house parties, but rather the safety of students and others on campus
31.
more stringent zoning laws, keeping student housing separated from other residential housing
23.
to elaborate on idea 18. some girls should dress very provacitively; however, these 'girls' are actuality crime fighting shemales.
20.
More liberal use of tasers by Officers of the Law, let people know, hey we have tasers, and yes we will use them.
18.
Girls should dress less provocatively if they do not want to be pursued by creepy dudes. Less cleeve and less beav.
15.
Sponsor events that would cause all the bad people in your area to gather in one place, and then avoid that place. Cock Fights, Dog Fights, Terrell Owens autograph signings, any animal fights are a good idea. Any event where you give away .375L of cheap alcohol should herd much of the "evil" vagabond society into an area.
14.
place alarms on lightposts that sends a distress signal to the closest operating police officer.
11.
brighter/more street lights, increase density of lighting infrastructures in residential areas i.e. around apartment buildings and dorms
10.
teach a safety course to freshman, make it a public speaking course with safety as the theme so it teaches safety and speaking skills
8.
make friends with a huge dude, preferably of african american ethnicity, only go places with him
4.
have a group of students camped out at different safety checkpoints that are safe to walk between
