Since the question states "if anything were possible" I would have to say that having devices that don't require any energy to run would be the obvious answer. However, realistically designing the house with energy efficiency in mind - using LED based lighting, having decent thermal insulating (for both hot and cold climates), in warmer climates utilizing cross flow ventilation, considering installing renewable energy sources (solar panels) and using devices that are more power efficient.

Install motion sensors so that lights go out when there is no movement in the room. If someone forgets to turn a light off, it will automatically shut off after 15 or 30 minutes.

It would be an interesting idea to receive a daily email telling me how much my power bills are for just that day. This would make me more aware of how and where I am wasting electricity and gas. Would need an independent organisation to do this - the big companies will be more interested in satisfying their shareholders than saving the planet.

I can identify a problem here but can't think of a solution: many appliances are left on stand-by during the day and over night.

Be nice to have an alarm that alerts me when a certain amount of electricity is being used. Maybe different alarms for different things, such as when a certain amount of light bulbs are being used.
