Different spaces to suit different users: teens hanging out, parents with young children in strollers, (learning-through-)play-space for little ones, study carrels, laptop power stations, comfortable places to sit and read quietly, meeting rooms, and lots o' Internet and computing access! And all of these spaces need to be easily accessible for people of all abilities, as well as to staff. Multiple places to check things out and ask staff questions. A/V stations to view/listen to materials.

assuming most of the public libraries are accessed by localites- it would be a good idea to have a survey and ask the people in the locality what kind of books/information they are eager to read when they are in the library ...stack up the shelfs with these books accordingly

make soft copies of all the materials- and shift the focus to get more people to access the library material online...

Have a list of all AV materials in a separate view online listing different genres; similar to browsing through Netflix.

Have all the books/articles scanned and available to me online.

Have loud libraries with music and people are encouraged to talk and laugh

Have book ratings so when I browse the shelf I can see recommended books

Allow me to self publish a book and shelve it at the library

Have an online list of available rentals with cover page art and all the features that Amazon's book search provides.

Regular emails to users telling them about latest books in.

Have a quiet room.
