Start with Linked In (www.linkedin.com). Then you probably want to join some social network(s) that are focused on your interests. Of course, if there aren't any that are in line with your interests, you can go to Ning (www.ning.com) and create your own social network around your interests. Finally, set up a site with a blog and start talking to the world about what you are interested in (www.terapad.com). Don't forget to interconnect all your stuff with links on your emails and posts etc.
